'Fred' Alfred Sumner Short, 57 BUXTON -- 'Fred' Alfred Sumner Short, 57, formally of Boynton Road, passed away on Oct. 23, 2008, at the VA Hospital at Togus. He was born in Portland, on June 20, 1951, the son of Alfred Paul and Alice (Woodman) Short. He attended Buxton schools and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Fred was proud of his service in the Navy Seabees and was involved in the initial construction of the U.S. military base at the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Throughout his life, Fred worked in the construction field and enjoyed being employed at job sites out of state. Fred was an avid brook fisherman, cook, and enjoyed watching the History Channel. He was also a member of the DAV. He is survived by his father, Alfred Short of Buxton, mother, Alice Pease of Bar Mills; stepfather, Albert Pease of Bar Mills; sons, Paul Short of Waterboro and Frederick Short of Parsonsfield; brother, Harry Short of Gorham, sisters, Jennifer Gaynor of Buxton, Debbie Bennett of Dayton, and Kathryn Hanna of Buxton; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at South Buxton (Tory Hill) Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are with Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home - Buxton. www.dcpate.com.
