Eugene B. Meier Sr., 83, a 46-year resident of Inverness, was a bookkeeper for the former Bache & Co., now part of Prudential-Bache Securities, for more than 20 years. Mr. Meier, who was born in Janesville, Wis., died Sunday in his home. Mr. Meier, who began working for Bache in 1950, also did commodities-related work for Merrill Lynch & Co. for 18 years. He was an independent trader at the Chicago Board of Trade for two years. Mr. Meier was a warrant officer with the U.S. Maritime Service who served as a radio operator during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Palatine and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 314 in Palatine. "He was an honest, God-fearing man," said his wife of 49 years, Madaline. "He was a good Christian."

Funeral services for Eugene B. Meier Sr.

83, a resident of Inverness since Nov. 1952, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Ahlgrim and Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine.

Born July 3, 1915, in Janesville, Wis., he died Sunday. Aug. 2, 1998, at home. Burial will be in Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst [sic].

Mr. Meier was a member of CRM American Seafarer USMS (TS), former member of the Chicago Board of Trade and for 18 years was associated with Merrill Lynch. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Palatine, Palatine Masonic Lodge #314 A.F. & A.M., Palatine Chapter #206 of the Royal Arch Masons and a 45 year member of the Inverness Association.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Madaline A. Meier (Nee Piepmeier) of Inverness; children, Eugene B. Meier Jr. of Inverness, Walter R. (Cora) Meier of Round Lake and Madaline E.M. (Dr. Philip) Carpenter of Sycamore; grandchildren, Catherine Koll and Christine and Tamara Rae Meier; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Rachel Koll; sister, Edith Meier Williams of Watertown, Wis.; brother, David W. (June) Meier of Rolling Meadows; brother-in-law, Ray Piepmeier of Columbia, Mo.; and four nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Robert Meier and daughter, Catherine Gene Meier.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
