Born under the name of James Meyers, he was adopted by his stepfather John G. Owston and took the Owston surname.

James died within hours of his older brother, Newton French Owston. They probably had not seen each other in nearly three decades.

James H. Owston was the station master at the Fort Wayne Rail Road Station of the Pennsylvania Rail Road. The station was located on Pittsburgh's North Side.
