"Aged Plover Man Laid To Rest Monday"

Plover- Final rites for Andrew Lotten Roberts were held Monday at 2 pm at the Plover Methodist church with Rev. E M Rasmussen in charge.
Mrs. Edwin Grove, organist, accompanied the quartet, B.D. Baker, Mrs Glenn Forsythe, Mrs. E H Westerman and O E Lehnus, as they sang, ‘In Jesus I Am Saved Evermore,' ‘In the Sweet Bye and Bye' and God Be With You Till We Meet Again.'
Pallbearers were their sons, Alfred, Clarence and Harold, and three nephews, Earl Mason, Forest Mason and Wilbur Roberts, Mrs Mabel Hendricks and Mrs. Guy Barker had charge of the flowers. McIntire Funeral Home of Rolfe was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Powhatan cemetery beside his wife.
Andrew Lotten Roberts was born June 20, 1866, to William A. and Henrietta Thompson Roberts, at Wright Corner, Dearborn county, Ind. He was one of seven children in a family including two sets of twins. Mr. Roberts passed away at his home July 2, 1953, at 4:30 p.m. at the age of 87 years and 12 days. He had been an invalid for the past seven years and passed away peacefully in his sleep with out pain or discomfort.
At the age of four years he moved with his parents to Warren county, Ia. When he was 22 years old he took up a wheat claim in Washington state. Two years later he came to what is now the Melvin Thorson farm in Des Moines Twp. He broke up part of this farm land with a walking plow, as well as parts of land on farms now occupied by Harrison Roberts, Leo Fanning and Ralph Knuffman. Prairie fires were fought nearly every fall. Mr. Roberts was instrumental in promoting the former Riverside Methodist church which was located on the Des Moines river. He moved from Des Moines Twp. to the present farm one and a half miles north of Plover in 1896, but returned to Des Moines Twp. for 10 years from 1921 to 1931.
Andrew Roberts was married September 11, 1895, at Indianola to Eve Belle Mason. To this union were born four sons who survived him. Joseph of Orange, Tex, Alfred of Mason City, Clarence at home, and Harold of Iowa City. His wife passed away December 6, 1940, and one daughter, Maude, passed away in infancy. Mr. Roberts' twin sister, Clara died at the age of 16. Also left to mourn his passing are one granddaughter, Mrs. Shirley Glockner of St. Paul, Minn, a grandson, Andrew Roberts of Mason City, and a brother, Charles of Rolfe. Two great-grandchildren, Richard and Darcy Jo Glockner of St. Paul also survive.
Mr. Roberts was an ambitious, hard working man of high Christian faith. He trusted God to the last. He never used profane language during all his long life. He had been a member of the Methodist church since the age of 10 years.
Out of town relatives attending the services were Mrs. Joe Roberts of Orange, Tex, Earl Mason and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Roberts of Mason City, Mr and Mrs. Forest Mason and Mr and Mrs Israel Halder of Pocahontas, Mr and Mrs Jim Buttner of Fonda, Alan Williams of Santa Barbara, Calif, Mrs. Duane Gibson, Wayne Hendricks, Mr and Mrs Jim William of Havelock, Mr and Mrs George Roberts of Sioux Rapids, Mr and Mrs Leo Fanning, Mr and Mrs Wilbur Roberts and Mr and Mrs AA Firkins of Rolfe, Mr and Mrs Henry Wegele of Des Moines, Harold Roberts of Iowa City, Mr and Mrs Virgil Roberts and son, Everett, of Mountain Lake, Minn."
