Charles B. Avey, 56, of Leavenworth, died Saturday morning, July 1, 2000 at his home.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1943 to Dallas M. and Ophelia (Rutherford) Avey in Wenatchee. The family lived in Peshastin and they later moved to Mt. Vernon, where he received his early education, graduating from Mt. Vernon High School in 1961.

Following high school, Chuck worked for the Forest Service and later attended the University of Washington receiving his degree in Forest Management in 1972.

On July 22, 1969 he married Melody Ann Ezell in Anacortes.

During his career with the Forest Service he was assigned to the Lake Wenatchee District, Entiat District, Winthrop District, Prospect, OR District and his last assignment was in Newport. He was on the "National All Risk" fire-fighting crew for many years, traveling across the country on major forest fires and participating in the clean-up following Hurricane Andrew in Florida in 1992.

Following his retirement, due to health in January of 1998, they returned to their Leavenworth home in December of 1998.

Chuck was active in community affairs, particularly in Newport where he was elected to the Newport School Board in 1991 where he served until returning to Leavenworth. He was the Legislative Representative for the school district and a member of the Board of Directors of W.S.S.D.A.

He loved his family dearly and enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife, (Melody) Ann Avey of the family home; two daughters, Christy Avey of Leavenworth and Charla and her husband, Kevin Vaughan of Seattle; one son, James Avey of Leavenworth; his mother, Ophelia Avey of Leavenworth; one brother, Ralph Avey of Marysville; two sisters, LaVetta West of Snohomish and Peggy Bluidnikas of Grand Rapids, MI; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Neal in 1979 and his father, Dallas in 1988.

A funeral service of commemoration for Charles B. Avey will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, July 6, 2000 in the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Magnus Udd, officiating. Concluding service and interment will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Children's Hospital, P.O. 5371, MS CH-23, Seattle, WA 98105-0371.

Friends wishing to make visitation may call at the Ward's Funeral Chapel Wednesday afternoon from 12-8 p.m.
