The funeral of Mrs. Jane W. Pitts, widow of Gideon Pitts, who died at her daughter's, Mrs. Frederick Douglass, near Washington, on Tuesday, March 22, was held at the Congregational church on Saturday at 11 A M , Rev Mr. Day delivering a fine discourse from the text, "A mother in Israel." Mrs. Douglass, Misses Jennie and Eva Pitts from Washington, and Gideon Pitts, of Alton, Iowa, were present at the funeral of their mother, Mrs. Spencer D. Short, the other remaining daughter, of this place, comprise the entire family. Mrs. A. J. Holden, of Buffalo, was also present. Mrs. Pitts was 78 years of age this present month. Of her own family, her mother, four sisters and two brothers all died in the month of March. Last week Monday, upon learning of the probable fatal termination of her mother's illness, Mrs. Short left for Washington, reaching there on Tuesday at 12 M , only to learn that one hour before her mother had been called to her heavenly borne. May she rest in peace.
