Mary Ellen Saltsgiver, one of nine children of Margaret (Kail) and Henry Saltsgiver, was born in Perry Township, Carroll County, Ohio, on 11 May 1842.

She married Isaac Monroe Peters on 29 August 1869 in Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa. Isaac was born to Mary (Frazier) and William Peters on 24 July 1845 in Macoupin County, Illinois.

They had five children before her death 08 September 1876. Isaac died 3 June 1886 in Forest City, Iowa.
