Griffin Shelden was born in 1836 in Deposit, Broome Co, NY, the second of seven children to bless the marriage of John W. Shelden and Deborah Gifford.

In 1860 he had moved to Susquehanna Depot, Susquehanna Co, PA and was working as a flagman for the railroad.

Griffin served his country bravely during the War of the Rebellion, enlisting on 30 Apr 1861 as a Private in Co D, 18th NY Vol Infantry at Middletown, Delaware Co, NY. He mustered in on 17 May 1861 at Sanford, Broome Co, NY.

He fought at the battles of Bull Run, Munson Hill, Springfield Station and Union Mills, all in Virginia. He was promoted to Corporal.

He died on 19 Jul 1862 of "Febris Typhoides" (Typhoid Fever), at the Regimental Hospital at Harrison's Landing, Charles City Co, VA. Some records say he died aboard the USS Vanderbilt, which was a hospital ship.
