MARY⁹ ELIZABETH NOYES paternal lineage: (Charles⁸, Abel⁷, Moses⁶, Joseph⁵, ⁴, ³, Rev James ², Rev. William¹) Mary is descended from Susannah White who made the maiden voyage on the Mayflower and her son Resolved White.

MARY ELIZABETH NOYES ROWE (66 yrs.) was the 2nd born child (Helen Augusta, Mary Elizabeth, Charles Augustus Jr., Martha Irene, Josephine Amanda Noyes) of Nancy Page Warren and Charles Augustus Noyes.

She was born June 13, 1839 in Hebron, McHenry County, Illinois.

Her mother, Nancy, died early 1856 ,when Mary was a teenager. Her father, Charles, sent Mary Elizabeth, to live with his sister, Sophia Noyes Hinsdell, who had married David B. Hinsdell at Pompey Hill, Onondaga County, NY on April 11, 1839. So Mary went to upstate Pompey Hill, Onondaga County, New York to live with the Hinsdells. They had considerable wealth and sent Mary to a private Academy to study Latin and the classics. Aunt Sophia's home had a ballroom, grand piano and an extensive library of the leading poets plus classic literature. Her aunt Sophia and uncle David had four children of her own. Sarah, Henry David, Carrie, and Charles Augustus Hinsdell. Henry and Carrie were twins.

Later, Mary Elizabeth's father, Charles, gave her a choice of music or painting lessons and she chose painting.

On June 15, 1860 in Walworth, Wisconsin, Mary Elizabeth Noyes (21 yrs) married Franklin ROWE b. Dec. 30, 1836 (23 yrs old), son of Lucy Stillwell and Lucian Rowe. Franklin's father died early when he drowned working on a fruit boat on Lake Erie. Both Mary and Franklin knew what it was like to lose a parent when young. Franklin had begun work early in life to support himself by working for the railroad for five years. Then took up farming in Humboldt, Iowa.

In 1896 at age 57, Mary suffered a stroke which paralyzed her entire right side, limiting her activities to a wheel chair. Her eyesight had been poor for years and following the stroke she was unable to read. Her mind remained keen . She had use for the Bible verses and poems she had committed to memory. She listened to her grandchildren read and was able to correct them as needed. In nine years no one heard a complaint from her lips. After her stroke, she was cared for by her daughter, Edith Emma Rowe Bedford.

Mary was short and frail of stature, but went through the trials of pioneer life cheerfully, uncomplainingly and through all this did not lose her charitable, loving, Christian disposition, living a life which was an example to everyone.

Mary was a woman of unusual character, a devout Christian - and by that I mean not in words, but in deeds, living a Christian life with all that implies- sacrificing herself to her family and friends, hospitable, generous to a fault, her latch string was always out to the tired and weary, the hungry or homeless, giving freely of her time and strength to those in need, whether it was labor or words of cheer or consolation, of a lovable disposition. In the newspaper it was written that "Mary Noyes Rowe was a pioneer woman of noblest character, strong mind, and a polished stone for the Master's building".
