Stanley E. Bernard, 82, of Piqua, died at 1:59 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at his residence.

He was born May 9, 1926, to the late George and Gertrude (Fischer) Bernard. On April 23, 1949, he married Adelle M. Meyer in Minster. She preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 2003.

Stanley is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael L. and Susan Bernard of Piqua and John P. (Jack) and Susan Bernard of Milford; one daughter, Sandra Black of Piqua; one brother and sister-in-law, Merlin and Mary Bernard of Minster; two sisters-in-law, Viola Shenk and Evelyn Schulte, both of Minster; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Randy) Fisher, Ryan (Kristin) Black, Jewel Black (Rick Thompson) and Brian Cary, all of Piqua, Heather (Jim) Braaksma of Columbus, Matthew Bernard of Cincinnati, and Sarah Bernard and Lauren Bernard, both of Milford; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; special friend and companion, Mary Shannon of Piqua; and special friend, Bonnie Payne of Piqua. He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Robert A. Black; one son, Mark Bernard; and one sister, Mary Buehler.

Stanley was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He also was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of Piqua VFW 4874, Piqua American Legion 184, Minster American Legion, a lifetime member of Piqua Fish & Game, and DAV. Stanley proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a sergeant and received two Bronze Stars. Stanley owned and operated Stan's Bar in Piqua for 20 years. He worked for Hobart Brothers in Troy for 16 years before retiring in 1990.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Angelo Caserta as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua. Veteran's honors will be presented by Minster American Legion Post 387.

Calling hours will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. Prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
