WAS FATIGUED AND HAD NOTHING TO SAY
Jealous, Jilted Lover Killed Wrong Woman When He Fired at Friend in Automobile.
By Associated Press.
ALTOONA, Aug. 10.—Hunted by posses for 20 hours after he shot and
killed his step-sister, Mrs. Rupert Beers, 28, Prank Aikens, 23, was captured at Sand Springs, between Blandburg and Lloydsville,, 18 miles northwest of here by Detective Ed Whited of Cambria County and three officers. He was taken to the Cambria county jail in Ebensburg, where he was formally charged with murder. Detective Whited, describing the capture last night, said that Aikens was unarmed and afoot when he surrendered but was making all possible
haste to get out of the country. Aikens had nothing to say in answer
to the questions asked him Whited said, "and seemed normal mentally,
but somewhat fatigued by his desperate attempt to escape."
Attentions Were Refused
Aikens shot Mrs. Beers yesterday afternoon after she, a companion, Mrs. Myrtle Bates, and her son, Gilbert, had spent the morning and part of the afternoon picking cherries. Aikens, who had previously been friendly with Mrs. Bates, a widow, refused the offer of a ride from the women, who were headed toward Van Ormer in an automobile. When the car moved off he shot through the back of the machine, the bullet from a 30-30 rifle piercing Mrs. Beers' skull. Authorities say that jealousy was undoubtedly the motive for the crime, as Mrs. Bates had on Sunday night refused Aikens' attentions. Members
of the family said he blamed Mrs.Beers for the situation.
Aikens will be given a preliminary hearing before Justice Rollins of Ebensburg Monday.
Mrs Beers was survived, by her husband and and three children. The funeral will, be held Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Glasgow. Mrs. Beers' home was in Van Ormer where both Beers and Mrs. Bates reside.
