Melvin Earl Swango, 77, of 938 Wabash Avenue, Rochester, passed away at 7: 33 a.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

Born Aug. 23, 1927, in Rochester, he was the son of William and Leona Good Swango. On Dec. 3, 1947, in Hibbard, he married Norma Jean Bishop. She preceded him in death on April 22, 1993. On July 7, 1997, in Rochester, he married Josephine Blue. She survives.

Mr. Swango retired from Wayne Wilson Construction, Kokomo. He was a U.S. A rmy veteran of World War II. He served with the 11th Airborne Division in the Pacific Theatre and occupation of Japan. He was a member of the Rochester American Legion and attended Church of the Nazarene, Rochester.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Swango, Rochester; sons, Mel L. and wife Frankie Swango, Rochester, Randy E. and wife Cindy Swango, Plymouth, Steve E. and wife Chris Swango, Virginia Beach, Va., and David E. and w ife Debbie Swango, Rochester; stepson, Dennis Blue, Clunette; stepdaughter, Debra Ellen and husband Matt Kenny, Akron; sisters, Virginia and husband Eugene McFarland and Evelyn McFarland, all of Rochester; 16 grandchildr en; 29 great grandchildren; four brothers in law; and four sisters in law. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rebabelle Conley; and brothers, Art, Chuck, Frederick and Junior Swango.

His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Revs. Mike McFarland and Tim McFarland officiating. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester, where military graveside services will be conducted by Rochester American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association.
