After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard the USS Enterprise air craft carrier during the Vietnam War. On September 19, 1970 he married Sharron Stranger at the United Methodist Church in Gotham. LaVerne worked at Badger Ordinance in Baraboo and later at Grell Lumber Company in Gotham.
The last few years LaVerne had resided at Pine Valley Health Care because of poor health. He enjoyed country western and gospel music, watching TV, playing guitar, genealogy research, visiting with his family, and in earlier years using his CB radio.
Survivors include: his wife Sharron of Richland Center, three brothers-in-law, David (Rhonda) Stranger of Alaska, Bob (Kathy) Stranger of Elmira, New York; Jim Stranger of New York; two sisters-in-law, Susan (Mike) Aumick of Chemung, New York; and Donna (Gerald) Morgan of Gillette, Pennsylvania; Toni Schmidt of Duluth, Minnesota, two uncles, Cecil (Betty) Parish of Muscoda and Buddy Parish of Muscoda, two aunts, Reola Parish and Ruby Brewer, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents and brother Larry.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel with Dr. C.D. Fretz officiating. Military gravesite rites were provided by the Local Veterans Military Memorial Honors Unit at the Basswood Cemetery.
Friends called on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel from Noon until the time of the service at 1:00 PM.
