Margaret was born on 28 August 1855 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of John Klosner and Elizabeth (Baetie) Blumer. Her parents came to the US from Switzerland. The last name was originally spelled Klosner, then Clossner, and now Closner.

Margaret married James Walter Savage in Seguin, Texas, on February 11 1875.
