Esther E. (Fike) Allen, 85, Solon, Ohio, died Wed-nesday, May 31, 2006, at Bedford Community Hospital from natural causes.
Born in the small farming community of Eglon, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Ai and Elizabeth (Crow) Fike.
She was the loving mother of Linda (husband Lloyd) Hockel of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Susan (husband Mark) Umerley of St. Augustine, Fla.; dear grandmother of Kimberly (husband Shane) Madigan, Columbus, Ohio, and Jay Umerley, St. Augustine; great-grandmother of Thomas, Patrick and Mary Esther Madigan; loving aunt and friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carl and Earl; two sisters, Martha and Mary; and her husband of 51 years, Coy Allen, in 1997
Esther was a proud World War II veteran, having served as 1st Lt. with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps with the 74th General Hospital in the European Theater. She graduated from Aurora High School, Aurora, W.Va., and St. Agnes Nursing School in Baltimore, Esther retired after 30 years of nursing at Bedford Community Hospital, Bedford, Ohio.
Friends were received at the Solon Community Church, Solon, on Friday, June 2.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Spring of the Brethren Church, P.O. Box 4, Eglon, WV 26716, for the family center building fund; or to the VFW.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Kindrick-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, Solon.
