Son of Nicholas and Mary (Gilman) Jacob.
After living in England, John lived in Watertown for a little while before moving to Hingham. He became the husband of Margery (Eames) Jacob on October 20, 1653 in Hingham. Margery died in 1659 and two years later on October 3, 1661 in Hingham, he remarried in and became the husband of Mary (Russell) Jacob. He worked as the surveyor in Hingham and he had fought in King Philip's War in 1675. In 1682 he became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. He owned land in what is presently known as the Glad Tidings Plain Historic District in Hingham. In 1692 he constructed a lumber mill on Cushing Pond in Hingham.
