James was an active member with his wife of the First Baptist Church in Anahuac.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Edward Nettles, son Richard Nettles, daughter Debra Cobb and a sister Joyce Butler.

Graveside Services for James Edward Nettles, of Smith Point, Texas, were 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Jackson Cemetery in Smith Point. Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac, Texas, was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Nettles died Sept. 11, 2008, at his residence. Survivors are his mother; his wife, Betty Joyce Gau Nettles, of Smith Point; his sons, Patrick and Paul Nettles; a brother, Jeff Nettles; his sisters, Peggy Smith, Kathleen Garren and Becky Furlow; his five grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
