In Jun 1917 he had a severe illness – a toxic thyroid. He was an invalid for one year during which time he was operated on four times. This affected his heart, which never did regain its normal function. In spite of this through out the remainder of his life he had an abundance of energy and no one ever realized his handicap.
In 1921 at Manassa, Colorado after teaching at San Louis State Academy he returned to Salt Lake City, broken in health. At this time he was again operated on.
In 1924 he graduated with a Masters degree in merchandising and with honors from New York University. He worked at Maldon, MA; Louisville, KY; Los Angeles, California. He and Ruby then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and he started the Brockbank Apparel Company, which he owned and operated until his death.
Merrill was active in church work and at the time of his death was President of the High Priest's Quorum and chairman of the Boy Scouts in Monument Park ninth ward.
He was a wonderful friend, a good businessman, an ideal husband and a loving father.
