In 2004, Kitty Dunkle’s essay entitled“The Little Gensimore Girl” won in the Adult Category of the Bedford Co. Historical Society Essay Contest. From the essay:
Hellan was the daughter of Dr. C.W. Gensimore and his wife, Gertrude. She was born in 1901 and was a beautiful, healthy child. Being the only child of a physician, she was indulged with extra luxuries of the time. Even being spoiled, she was a lovely, generous little girl. To the Gensimores, she was their life. When she was five years old, she contracted pneumonia and died less than a week later.
