He assumed management of the former Oliver Funeral Home that year, and in 1963 purchased the firm, eventually forming a partnership with his son, Roger, until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ, where he had served as a deacon at one time. Other memberships included the East Palestine Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president and secretary, the American Legion Post 31, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579, East Palestine Lodge #417 F.& A.M. He served on the board of education for the East Palestine City School District in the early 1970s. He had always enjoyed playing golf, while he was a member of the East Palestine Country Club.

His wife, the former Doris Harshman, whom he married June 30, 1951, preceded him in death Aug. 15, 2006.
