A long illness ended in death today for Samuel Clay, 78, a LaGrande resident for 58 years, who died at his home at East Russell early this morning.
He was born in Kentucky in 1869 and moved into the Grande Ronde valley in 1889. He had been a farmer here.
Mr. Clay's survivors include his wife Elizabeth, six children, Mrs. L.S. Mattoon of La Grande, D. Clay of Coquille, Oreg., Lee Clay of Walla Walla, David Clay of Folsom, Calif., Mrs. Frances Wagner of Phoenix, Ariz., and Wesley Clay of Elgin; three brothers, James of La Grande, Albert of Walla Walla, and Henry in California, and a sister, Mrs. Callie Buchanan of the Dalles,
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
