Annie Piety Helferstay is the daughter of John and Lydia (Blondell) Helferstay. Her father John is the son of Henry and Margaret Helferstay of Martinsburgh, WV. Lydia (3rd wife of John Helferstay) is the daughter of Anthony and Rosella (Loche). She married 2nd, Michael Murphy and they had two children together. In the 1850 Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley, Virginia, "Piety" is incorrectly listed as a Murphy.
At 18, Annie Piety had a son with Hugh Atwell named John William Atwell. I do not think they were ever married as I have Annie and John in the 1860 census (alone) as Helferstey. George adopted him and the name was changed to Hines. John William was born prior to Annie and George's marriage as John William Atwell's christening says he was born on 22 Apr 1860 in Washington, D.C. to Hugh Atwell and Annie.
