Graveside services for William Joseph Alverson Sr., of Auburn, were Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery with Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home directing. Dr. Tom Steed officiated.

Mr. Alverson, who was 92 years old, died Oct. 2, at Oak Park. He was born the son of Virgil Madison and Margaret Blackwell Alverson in Atlanta, Ga., and moved to Talladega, at an early age. He lived in Albertville for 51 years.

He received his bachelor's degree in 1939 from API (Auburn University) and was a graduate of the LSU School of Banking.

He was retired as Vice President of Compass Bank in Albertville. His memberships include the Auburn Church of Christ, Alpha Gamma Rho, Gamma Sigma Delta and Phi Kappa Phi.

He won the Danforth Fellowship while a student at Auburn and was named the best all around junior in the College of Agriculture in 1939.

Following graduation, Mr. Alverson worked with the Alabama Extension Service as county agent in Chambers County, working primarily with 4-H clubs. While working in LaFayette, he was president of both the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.

The Alverson family moved to Albertville in 1946, where he became active in the Civitan Club, City Planning Board and the 4-H Foundation.

He will long be remembered for the immeasurable work he did to promote rural community development and the agriculture economy throughout the Sand Mountain and Northeast Alabama area.

He held the honorary State Farmers Degree from the FFA and the Alabama State 4-H Alumni Award in 1963.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ford Alverson. He is survived by his daughter, Jan Barnes, of Cartersville, Ga; sons, Bill Alverson Jr. (Snooky), of Auburn, Bob Alverson (Carole), of Anthem, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Jay (Leanne) Alverson, Amy (Len) Lyons, Brandi (Zack) Kellis, Nikki (Scott) McElroy, Alan and Ryan Barnes; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Auburn Church of Christ Building Fund at P.O. Box 62, Auburn, AL 36830; or to the Auburn University Foundation for the 4-H Foundation.

The family will receive friends following the services.
