Source for Rebecca’s maiden name:

Daughter Mary (Chew) [Nagle] Soutter 1914 Death Cert: Mom Rebecca T Sidman

Daughter Anna C (Chew) James 1933 Death Cert: Mom Rebecca Sidon (incorrectly transcribed as Sison, the “y" in New Jersey obscures the “d”)

Sidman vs Sidon: On FamilySearch, if you search on residence in Pennsylvania 1850-1900, there are ZERO Sidon entries; 103 Sidman’s, so I **assumed** that Sidman was more viable than Sidon.

A better reason for choosing Sidman: the informant on Mary’s death cert was her sister Anna C. James. I figured Anna in 1914 was more likely to know her own mother’s maiden name than whoever the informant was on Anna’s in 1933. I can’t decipher the informant’s name… Huron Home for Old Ladies?

Note: Sarah Emma (Chew) Zitzman’s death cert and funeral record do not give a maiden name at all for Rebecca. Also, death cert is “Fitzman” - the image is wrong, it is not a transcription error.

--------------------------

Anna herself is interesting: on the 1900 census, Anna was still single, living as housekeeper in the home of Charles H James who according to the census was married. I don’t know to whom. On the 1910 census, Anna and Charles were married. Charles died in 1911. Charles H. James was the executor of Anna’s mother, Rebecca T. Chew’s will, which was written in 1895.

Anna’s exact birth date is unknown. 1840 is consistent with the 1850 & 1860 censuses.

In 1900, she was
1850: age 10
1860: age 20
1880: age 39
1900: age 52 (May 1848)
1910: age 61
1933: age 88 (death cert)

I haven’t found her in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

--------------------------

John P. and Rebecca Chew were buried with 3 of their children: John Wesley Chew, Mary Soutter, and Anna C. James along with her husband Charles H James. The original cemetery card for Lot 6, Div A Sec 19 in American Mechanics has him as “Charles A.”, but Charles dc, obit & several other sources have Charles H. See image below.

I found Rebecca’s will interesting because she disinherited a couple of granddaughters between the original will written in 1895 and the annotated will executed in 1897.

Rebecca’s Will, written in 1895, executed in 1897.

Daughter Mary Nagle*

Daughter Anna Chew

Daughter Emma Zitzman (Sarah Emma (Chew) Zitzman)

Granddaughter Clara Hunter (Clara Wesley Zitzman, m. George Washington Hunter)

Grandson Harry H Zitzman Jr $ 100 and one share in the Cumberland Building association (crossed out) “The above I have authorize changed. I leave him the share in the Building assoctiation ??? until it matures.”

Grandson Wesley Zitzman $100 when he turns 21. Changed it to $50.

Granddaughter Ella Zitzman $50. Crossed out and leave her nothing.

Granddaughter Blanch Irene Hunter. Crossed out and leave her nothing.

* Mary was married to George A. Nagle. See 1870 census living with John P and Rebecca Chew. I don’t know what happened to George A Nagle or when; nor do I know what Soutter she married or when. In 1910, widowed Mary is living with Anna and Charles James.

That was a lengthy answer to your question: what was my source for Rebecca T. (Sidman) Chew’s maiden name.

Short answer: Daughter Mary (Chew) [Nagle] Soutter’s 1914 Death Cert.
