Mr. James was a famous railroad financier and in the 1930's he was the world's second richest man. He owned several famous yachts including two named Aloha the second of which he sailed around the world. He was one of the owners of the schooner Coronet, built in 1885 and currently being restored in Newport, RI. In 1905 he sailed her around the Horn to Japan on an expedition with scientists from his alma mater Amherst College. In 1916 he transformed a plot of land in Newport, Rhode Island, into an authentic miniature Italian-Swiss village, complete with stone buildings, medieval-looking turrets, and Roman arches. In 1928 funds he donated facilitated the construction of the Christadora, a settlement house, which is a seventeen-story edifice at 147 Avenue B on the corner of East 9th Street in New York City.
