Mary Ann Ankney was born in Emerald Township, Paulding County, Ohio to Joshua Ankney (1838-1908, 1861-65 Civil War veteran, 68th Ohio Infantry) and first wife (Mary) Adaline McKown (1847-93).

Not quite age 14, Mary Ann married (Christopher) Frederick Cramer (1866-1929), age 20, on June 15, 1886 in Paulding County. They had at least one son that lived to adulthood, Harley E. Cramer (1886-1951). Mary and Fred Cramer soon divorced.

Mary remarried to John R. Sherer on May 30, 1891 in Paulding County. They had a son, Ora Estel Sherer, and a daughter, Ruby M. Sherer.

John and Mary raised their two children on a farm in Berrien County, southern Michigan. Mary died in 1926 at age 53. John did not remarry and survived until 1940.
