Her death was a shock to her relatives and friends few of whom knew she was sick and those who knew she was sick and those who knew of her illness did not anticipate its sad ending. She had not been well for some time and had resigned her position as teacher in the Rockford Street School to take effect the first of the year. Even after she went to the hospital a few days before her death few realized the seriousness of her condition. A blood transfusion was resorted to last Thursday, her husband's blood proving a match for hers but in spite of this she died suddenly about 9 pm.
Mrs. Alma Walker Ashby was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Walker, of McCormick, S.C. and was educated at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C. She came here five or six years ago as a member of the school faculty. In time a romance developed and she was happily married last spring to Atty James F. Ashby, son of the late Dr. T.B. Ashby, who was for years a popular physician serving Mount Airy and community, and Mrs. Myrtle Ross Ashby of this city. Mr. Ashby is the prosecuting attorney in the local recorder's court and a rising young lawyer. Mrs. Ashby was a member of the Baptist Church in her home town but had not moved her membership to this city.
As a mark of respect to Mrs. Ashby's memory the schools closed at 2:30 Friday afternoon.
