Louis Robinson, 56, superintendent of the Carthage Independent School District since 1966, died Tuesday evening at Panola General Hospital following a brief illness.

Services have been set for 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Carthage. Interment will be in Restland Cemetery.

A former Seymour High School and Baylor University football star, Robinson taught and coached one year at Grandview before coming to Carthage in 1941 as head football coach and teacher.

He volunteered for military duty during World War II in 1942 and was in the European Theater, earning the rank of first lieutenant before his discharge in 1946.

Robinson returned from the war to be named Carthage junior high school principal, serving six years before his elevation to high school principal in 1952. He served in that capacity until he was named successor to Q. M. Martin as Carthage superintendent in 1966.

He was a native of Vera, Texas, in Knox County, and attended Seymour High School and Texas Military College at Terrell prior to entering Baylor University where he obtained a B. A. degree in 1940 and an M. A. degree in 1948.

Robinson was active in civic affairs and in 1971 was named recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award, an annual award made by the Panola County Chamber of Commerce.

He is past president of the Carthage Rotary Club, a member of First United Methodist Church, member of the Texas State Teachers Association and other professional associations, a past director of the Chamber of Commerce and a life member of Parent-Teachers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, and son, Don, both of Carthage, by a grandson, David, and by two brothers, Bill Robinson of Hamilton and Henry Frank Robinson of Tacoma, Wash.
