Larry Don Russell, 69, of Athens, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Robert L. and Rachel Cranfield Russell, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah June "Debbie" Ivens, on June 14, 2007; and one son-in-law, Sam Kirk Gardner. He was a member of Mt. Verd Baptist Church, where he had served as treasurer. He was a retired employee of Bowater Southern Paper Corporation, working there for 35 years, and was a member of the Bowater Southern Paper Mill Retirees. He was a member of the Thomas A. Hamilton Lodge No. 317 F. & A.M, was presently serving as Junior Warden and had served as Past Master. He was a member of McMinn Chapter No. 74 R.A.M., Athens Council No. 118 C.M. and Athens Commandary No. 34 Knights Templar. He also was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Longstreet-Zollicoffer Camp No. 87. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Irene Rountree Russell of Athens; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Sharon Annette Gardner of Alma, Ill., and Karen Irene and Timothy "Tim" Sliger, Penny Gail and Kirk Martin and John Ivens, all of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Tracy Don and Bedelia Russell of Cookeville; one brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence Mack and Sandra Russell of Athens; seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn Sliger, Jake Sliger, Sarah Gardner, Nathan Gardner, Emma Russell, Abby Russell, Aaron Martin and Tyler Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Sliger and Laymember Harold Smith officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Royce Cranfield, Joe Cranfield, Bill Cranfield, Carl Brewer, Jim Lovingood and Jason Smith.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
