Ezekiel Jacob Levy enlisted June 17, 1861 as a Sergeant in company A 46th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded and captured at Roanoke Island, February 8th, and paroled February 21, 1862. Levy was promoted to Second Lieutenant February 21, 1864, wounded at Petersburg June 17, 1864 and promoted to First Lieutenant that same day. He was commanding the company when his brother Isaac was mortally wounded, also on June 17, 1864.
Ezekiel Levy was promoted to Captain in November, 1864 and served as such to the end of the war. He was the ranking Jewish officer to enter military service from Richmond.
