R.B. was born in Luling, Texas, January 15, 1915, to Hugh L. and Minnie Lee Smith.
He married Docia Belle Adair in 1933, in Crosbyton, Texas, where he farmed with his father.
While living in Texas, two sons were born. In 1940 during the Depression, R.B. moved his family to Las Cruces, N.M. While residing there, two daughters and a son, (Dwight Longino, who was lost to diphtheria) were born. During World War II, he served in the 3rd Army, 76th Armored Division, where he received a Purple Heart.
In 1953, he and his family moved to Willcox, and resided there for 44 years. He loved the Willcox area and made many good friends. That was where he called home. His declining health forced a move closer to his daughters who helped with his care.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Docia Belle, and four living children: Alton Smith of Willcox, Jim (Marlene) Smith of Loma, Colorado, LaNell (John) Payne of Safford, and Gayle (Elbert) Layton of Central; 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family and friends will be meeting to remember his life at the home of Elbert and Gayle Layton, in Central, Arizona, on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
