J. Manuel Hughes

The funeral for J. Manuel Hughes, 91, 1531 Sherwood Way, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Westminster United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. J. Gordon Bechtel of the First Presbyterian Church will conduct the service.

Burial, with services conducted by Masonic Lodge 12, will be in Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia. Mr. Hughes died Aug. 20, 1996, at Newman Hospital.

Memorial contributions to the Westminster United Presbyterian Church may be sent to Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Mr. Hughes owned or grazed cattle in his Flint Hills pastures most of his life. He also was a trust officer from 1959 to 1965 at Citizens National Bank.

From 1928 to 1959 he owned Hughes-Todd Jewelry. Earlier, he was employed in lumber yards in Emporia and Cushing, Okla.

He was mayor of Emporia for two years and served as a city commissioner from 1949 to 1953. He was a former member and past president of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.

J. Manuel Hughes, the son of John G. and Annie Jones Hughes who emigrated from Wales in 1870 to the Emporia area, was born Dec. 10, 1904, on a farm southeast of Emporia. When Mr. Hughes was about 4 years old, the family moved to Emporia where he attended school.

He graduated in May 1926 from the College of Emporia.

He married Marie E. White in 1928. They were divorced. He married Kathryn Davies in 1942. She died in February 1963. He married Ruth Evans on May 3, 1964.

Mr. Hughes was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, where he was treasurer for 25 years. He was on the church's board of trustees 49 years and was superintendent of the Sunday school.

He was a member and Past Master of Emporia Masonic Lodge 12. In the York Rite Bodies he was Past Illustrious Master of Council 7, Past High Priest, Chapter 12, Past Commander of Commandery 8 and the Knight of Templar Drill Team.

Other organizations he belonged to included the Neosho Valley Shrine Club, Arab Temple of the Shriners and Scottish Rite Bodies.

He also was temporary president of the Flint Hills Grass Roots Association in the 1970s.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert J. Hughes of Buena Vista, Colo.; two daughters, Kathryn Kay Woodbury of Quenemo and Elizabeth "Libby" Casas of Washington, Maine; a stepson, John Evans of Modesto, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Janet Delaney of San Antonio, Texas; a sister Nellie Underwood, 1603 Berkeley Road; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
