John B. Birdwell was the son of George Birdwell and Elizabeth A. Russell. Elizabeth was buried at Crowley Cemetery, John B. married Isabella Virginia Wherry in Rusk County, Texas, on January 27, 1853, and she too is buried at Crowley Cemetery. They had eight children: Matthew R., John P., Susan Janet "Jennie", R. Bennie, Mary Cotton "Dink", Bettie S., John R., and Maggie.
John served in Co.F, 17th Texas Consolidated Dismounted Infantry CSA.
