He was born in Belmont, OH to the family of James Stephen Barrett. He enlisted on Aug. 22, 1863 from his residence in Centerville, IA. He was taken prisoner on July 1864 at Newnan, Coweta County, GA, sent to Andersonville Prison, GA and then to Florence Prison, SC.
He was paroled on Dec. 18 1864 at Annapolis, MD and discharged on 11 Jul 1865 at Davenport, IA. On Feb. 26, 1865 he was married to Sarah Vandike Barnett (Sep. 26 1844-Nov. 21 1922). They had five children, Arminda Barrett, James Barrett, Russell Barrett, Effie Barrett, and Ernest Barrett (1877-1949).
On Dec. 19, 1884 he was granted an invalid pension (#528291), certificate #381357.
