Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A 1847 graduate of the United States Military Academy and a Mexican War veteran, he was serving as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps at the outbreak of the Civil War. He first joined the staff of Brigadier General James H. Carleton's staff as his Assistant Quartermaster, then served as the Chief Quatermaster of the Wheeling, West Virginia depot. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". Remaining in the Regular Army, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and died while on active duty in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. He was the son-in-law of famed Confederate spy Rose O'Neal Greenhow.

Originally interred 31 May 1876 in Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.
Disinterred 16 March 1877 and interred in Ohio.
