Dr. Daniel Dwight Hitchcock, eldest child of Rev. Jacob Hitchcock and Nancy Brown, b. Dec. 19, 1822 at Dwight Mission to the Cherokee Indians in the former Arkansas Territory, now Pope County, Arkansas. He d. and was bur. at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory July 17, 1867, and now has a prominent monument at Fort Gibson National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, OK.

Daniel Dwight Hitchcock, M.D., son of Jacob and Nancy (Brown) Hitchcock, was born at Dwight Mission, Cherokee Nation, in 1823. Taught school at Park Hill mission station, and at Sweet Town, Cherokee Nation; studied medicine at New Haven, and at Bowdoin Coll. [Brunswick, Maine]; M.D., Bowdoin, 1851; practiced among the Cherokee Nation, until the rebellion; was made prisoner by the rebels, but on the approach of the Union army, was left by them; served as Surgeon of the 1st [sic 2nd] Indian Regt. until end of war; returned to his old home among the Cherokees. Died from cholera, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, July 17, 1867. Married, (1) Feb. 15, 1853, Sarah, dau. of [Rev.] Samuel A. Worcester, of Park Hill, Cherokee Nation, who died June 30, 1857; (2) Dec. 22, 1864, Hannah, sister of his first wife. No [sic] children.

[Class of 1844] Daniel Dwight Hitchcock[, M.D.] Commissioned Feb. 28th, 1863, at Bentonville, Ark., Asst. Surgeon with rank of Captain, 2nd Indian Regt. Home Guards. Served at Prairie Grove, and in various marches in Missouri and Arkansas, but mostly in Hospital service in the field and at Fort Gibson. Appointed March 14th, 1865, Medical Inspector 3d Brigade, 3d Division, Gen. J. M. Thayer. Health poor, but off duty only two weeks. Arrested at home and property confiscated Aug. 15th, 1862, and held prisoner for three months [by the Confederate Army]. Mustered out May 31st, 1865, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation. [died] 1867.

Daniel m. 1) Feb. 15, 1853 at Park Hill, prob. by his future father-in-law, Sarah Worcester, dau. of Rev. Samuel Austin Worcester and Ann Orr, b. Sept. 30, 1828 at New Echota in the Cherokee Nation, now Calhoun, Gordon County, GA. She d. June 30, 1857 likely as a result of childbirth, her newborn dau. Sarah dying at or about the same time. They had two children, the eldest who survived:

• i. Laura Hills Hitchcock, b. Feb. 13, 1854 at Park Hill in Cherokee Indian Territory (now Park Hill, Cherokee County, OK), d. Jan. 3, 1911 at Montreal, Canada; m. Aug. 26, 1879 at the Tullahassee Mission in Creek Indian Territory, Edmund Desire d'Albenas, b. May 27, 1839 at Toulous, France and d. Mar. 26, 1905 at Montreal, Canada. Five children of the family b. variously at Denison, TX; Muskogee, OK; Wichita, KS; and Montreal, Canada.

On Dec. 22, 1864 prob. at Fort Gibson in Cherokee Indian Territory, Daniel m. 2) his sister-in-law Hannah Worcester, the younger sister of his 1st wife, the widow of Abijah Hicks with five children. She was b. Jan. 29, 1834 at New Enchota, now Calhoun, GA. She was interred at Fort Gibson National Cemetery Jan. 12, 1917. By this marriage was b. one child, dau. Sarah Daisy, b. at Fort Gibson Oct. 6, 1866 who d. in infancy Sept. 22, 1867.
