William Matthew Melton
 Funeral services were held for W.M. Melton at the Alfalfa Baptist church at 2:30 Saturday afternoon the aged pioneer having passed away at Verden Friday, Jan. 30 after a short illness. Interment was made in the Alfalfa cemetery. Rev. W.A.R. Lovell assisted by Rev. W.S. Deatherage conducted the service.
 William Matthew Melton was born April 2, 1846 at Marshall, Arkansas and died January 30, 1931 at Verden aged 84 years, 9 months and 28 days. He wad a veteran of the Civil war, having served under General Price. On December 10, 1868 he was married to Mary C. Gray and to this union 10 children were born, two of whom died in infancy.
 He is survived by his wife, eight children, forty-seven grandchildren forty-six great grandchildren and one brother. The children are: J.A. Melton of Osage; Mrs. J.W. Reece, G.H. Melton and T.G. Melton of Carnegie; J.M. Melton, Hot Springs; Mrs. W.s. Treece, Marshall, Ark; C.H. Melton, Verden; and Mrs. F.M. Cornuell, Los Angeles, Calif. The children were all present except Mrs. Treece and Mrs. Cornuell.
 Grandpa Melton united with the Primitive Baptist church in 1893 and lived a true Christian life. Besides his relatives he is affectionately remembered by many friends who knew him on his visits here.
