He was born James Newton Carnahan in Madison County, Missouri. It was there that he married his first wife, Leodicia Logan Johnson in 1856. At some point between 1880 and 1887, they moved to Joplin, Texas, where "Leo Dicy" died. James married Mary Anne Jenkins in 1890.
