Richard L. Helt 74, of Viola died Friday, August 1, 2008 at his home. He was born February 8, 1934 in Richland Center the son of Herman and Adalee (Ward) Helt.

Following high school, Richard worked in the logging business until joining the Army, serving from 1955-1957.

He then hauled milk and earned his cheese makers license, working for several factories in the area.

Richard married Elnore Christoffer on September 28, 1963 in Waukon, IA.

The couple farmed in the Viola and LaFarge areas until retiring, when they moved to Ash Ridge.

Richard then worked several years for Matthes Farms. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son and grandson.

Richard is survived by two children, Orlynn (Tracy Rundle) Helt of Bangor, Pamela (Bobby) Swinney of Roswell, New Mexico, 5 grandchildren, Ben and Alicia Helt, Jonathon (Melinda) Sykes, Kennon (Natalie) Swinney, Cory Rundle, 7 great-grandchildren, Jahari, Jaryn, Jalen, Wyatt, Bailey, Sydney, Adyson, sister Doris Helt, special friend Angie Probst of Fort Atkinson, brother Theron Helt of Viola, sister-in-law, Peggy (Richard) Marrets of Tripoli, IA, brother-in-law, Dale (Kathy) Christoffer of Clarksville, OH, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elnore, a brother and sister-in-law Francis (Vera) Helt, and a brother-in-law Lavern Christoffer.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel in Richland Center with Reverend Bonita Dorsheid officiating.

Burial was held at the Viola Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites provided by Viola American Legion Post # 447.

Friends called at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Monday, August 4, 2008 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Friends also called on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 10:00 A.M.

The family suggested that memorial be given to the Viola Rescue Squad or the Viola Cemetery.

The Pratt Funeral Service of Richland Center assisted the family with their arrangements.
