Mr. Cox was born in 1887 in Medicine Bow, Nebraska and came to Merrill in 1901. He was one of the largest early-day sheepmen and in 1924 joined his brothers in installing the first dikes in the Tulelake area. He obtained a homestead near Tulelake in 1938 and retired from ranching in 1965. The following year he moved to Brookings.
Mr. Cox was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Brookings Grange. He served with the Army's Rainbow Division in World War I.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dan (Ardina) Crawford, Tulelake; and Mrs. Bill (Betty) Nelson, Renton, Wash.; son, Joe, Mesa Ariz.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four nieces. His wife, the former Esther Griffith whom he married July 4, 1921, died in 1967.
