Deceased Name: CYWAR, ELIZABETH MARY
Elizabeth Mary Cywar of Vista passed September 8, 2007, at 88. Born in New Jersey on September 7, 1919 to Walter and Elizabeth Brower, Beth married her high school sweetheart Sigmund Cywar in 1941, a marriage that lasted 59 years until Sigmund's passing in 2000. They had five children over 18 years and worked together in several businesses including owning record stores. Beth was a fantastic cook and wrote a column under the name Beth Shell called Something's Cooking for the Asbury Park Evening Press. She was the Senior Winner in Pillsbury's 17th Busy Lady Bake-off in 1966 for her Hideaway Cake, which Pillsbury then marketed as the Bundt cake. Beth and Sig moved their family to Carlsbad, California in 1966, then to Vista in 1972. Beth continued to write about cooking for the Evening Tribune as they opened a McDonald's franchise on Canyon Dr., followed over the years by units on Mission Ave., West Vista Way and Plaza Dr., all in Oceanside. Beth was active in the Carlsbad Woman's Club, the Christian Woman's Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside. Beth managed 11 departments for May Company of Carlsbad in the Plaza Camino Real Mall when it first opened. Beth and Sig retired in 1989 and enjoyed traveling, their grandchildren, and being together. Beth was the backbone for her family through the depression, union strikes, the death of a beloved son Gary Roger, and illness. She twice survived cancer. Beth is survived by her children Alan Sigmund Cywar of Oceanside, Roger Alan Cywar, Cynthia Beth Edginton of Utah, and Diane Cynthia Kennedy of Fallbrook; grandchildren Paul and Miranda Kennedy of Fallbrook, Roger, Weston and Thomas Millen of Utah, and her loyal and loving dog Bear. Beth will be laid to rest at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 14th, at Eternal Hills in Oceanside. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Elizabeth Hospice Foundation at (760) 737-2050 or www.elizabethhospice.org.
