Obituary

James T. Lee, Sr., a citizen of Miami county nearly sixty years, died early Sunday morning, March 29, 1925, at the home of his son, Robert E. Lee, east of Louisburg. Death, which was due to heart trouble and complications followed a lingering illness of several months. He was aged 78 years 9 months and 20 days.

James Taylor Lee was born June 9, 1846, at Syracuse, Wyandotte county, Ohio. In October, 1868, he and his brother, Robert, landed at Westport, Mo., and proceeded to Pleasant Hill, Mo., where Robert took sick and, after an illness of three weeks, died. James returned to Ohio with the body of Robert, but in the fall of 1869 returned to Kansas with another brother, Lafayette, settling two homesteads at Wea, Miami county, Kansas.

In September 1869, he was married to Laura Jane Van Gundy, who died in September, 1870, leaving one daughter, Mrs. A.E. Whitaker. On December 25, 1877 he was married to Mary Ellen Brown, who died June 18, 1919. To this union were born six sons and two daughters. In 1882 he removed his family to the home farm one mile east of Louisburg where his death occurred. He is survived by nine children: Floyd B. Lee, Hays, Kansas; Earl V. Lee, Ramona, Okla; Roy L. Lee, Paola; Mrs. C.G. Wittenborn, Arkansas City, Kansas; James T. Lee, Jr., Louisburg; Robert E. Lee, Louisburg; Edwin C. Lee, Compton, Calif; and Mrs. O.D. Gardner, Wetmore, Kansas. He also leaves six brothers and sisters: Lafayette Lee, Louisburg; Samuel V. Lee, Cloves, N.M.; Hugh Lee,Sycamore, Ohio J.V.Lee, Louisburg; Carrie Pancoast, Okmulgee, Okla, and Joanna Lee Pancoast, Los Angeles, California.

"Uncle Jim" as he was familiarly called by his hosts of friends, both old and young has been a conspicuous citizen in Miami county for 56 years. He came to Kansas almost empty-handed, but accumulated a comfortable competence, has reared a large family, and took an active part in politics. He was an ardent member of the Presbyterian church at Louisburg until that congregation disbanded, after which he never actively affiliated with another church but was a regular attendant as long as his health permitted.

He was a fearless champion of his opinions, strong of conviction and prompt in execution. With all this he was a staunch friend to scores, a wise counselor to old and young, and an excellent father. He was one of a few survivors of that group of stalwart pioneer who have conquered the vast waste of Kansas and made her blossom as a
garden.

Funeral services will be conducted from the M.E. church this Thursday afternoon by Rev. A.J. Cutrell, assisted by Rev. E.J. Carlson and Elder C.C. England. Interment will be in the Louisburg cemetery.
