Obituary of Chester Griffitts, 92, of rural Sweet Springs, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Born Jan. 4, 1916, in Hutchinson, KS., he was the son of the late Grover Griffitts and Katherine Griebel Griffitts. On Oct. 22, 1938, in Kansas City, he married Opal Lemmons, who preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 2000. He had lived in Saline County his entire life and worked on the railroad, worked in construction as a bridge builder and was a farmer. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Sweet Springs and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a tail gunner on the USS Homer Lea in the South Pacific. He was also a member of Blackburn American Legion Post 478.

Survivors include three sons, David O. Griffitts of rural Slater, Daniel O. Griffitts and Uthel Griffitts, both of rural Marshall; one daughter, Joyce I. Eckhoff of rural Sweet Springs; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Betty McEneny of Warsaw, Faye Fain of Concordia, Anna Edwards of Sedalia, Maxine Crank of Concordia and Marguerite Driver of Sweet Springs; three brothers, Lewis Griffitts of Independence, Grover "Sonny" Griffitts of Harrisburg and Paul Griffitts of Warsaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Jacquelyn Eckhoff; one granddaughter, Candy Griffitt; two brothers, Lawrence Griffitts and Ralph Griffitts; and one sister, Frances Sims.
