Thomas Hamilton, an old and respected citizen, died Thursday. He was born in Berwick, Scotland, in 1814, where his youthful days were spent. In 1848 he married Katherine Spowart (Stewart?), and in 1849 they sailed to seek their fortune in the new world, being over six weeks in crossing the Atlantic. they landed at Quebec, ascended the St. Lawrence river as far as Waddington, the home of an old uncle, James Purves. He was the possessor of a half penny of English make. He stayed with his uncle until 1852, when he bought a piece of land in the town of Louisville, 2 1/2 miles east of Chase Mills. In September, 1862, he joined the 142nd Regiment, CO S, forming in Waddington under Gen Curtis of Ogdensburg, and served three years and four months, then returned to his family. In 1892 he retired from the farm and moved to Chase Mills. His home was burning in 1898, then he moved to Raymondville, his present home. He leaves a wife, four sons and six daughters, William of Chase Mills, Joseph of Malone, Thomas of Dakota, Andrew of Iowa, Mrs. R. Pearson of Madrid, Mrs. George Carr of Waddington, Mrs. John Winslow of Watertown, Mrs. Herington of Norfolk, Margaret Hamilton and Mrs. Babcock of Raymondville. The family wish to express thanks for kindness and sympathy extended during the illness and death of Mr. Hamilton.
