Joseph spent his whole life in the area now known as Kannapolis. In 1814, he purchased from his father a tract of 175 acres of land, located on both sides of Irish Buffalo Creek, for $500.
They were faithful members of Bethpage Presbyterian Church, and are buried in the cemetery there, at what is now Bethpage Methodist Church. When the church decided to move to a new location, Joseph made a valuable contribution towards its construction. He was ordained an Elder in 1828.
