McDaniel was the 9th and last child of Rev. Joseph Dorris from Ireland and Katherine (McDaniel) Dorris.

McDaniel married Mary "Polly" Buckner daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Holliday) Buckner, Jan. 4, 1827 in Cole Co., Missouri, was among the first marriages in Jefferson City, Cole Co., Missouri.. Mary "Polly" died between 1840 and 1849.

McDaniel and Mary (Buckner) had 5 sons;
1. Henry born between 1828-1832, died in infancy
2. Joseph E. 1834-1917
3. George M. 1837-1922
4. Daniel born 1839 died in infancy between 1840-1850
5. Martin P. 1840-1903

Mary "Polly" (Buckner) Dorris died between 1840 and 1849.

McDaniel married 2nd Mary Booth in March 1850, they did not have children.

McDaniel died between 1870-1873 and is buried in this Woodland-old cemetery with 2nd wife Mary (Booth) Dorris.

The Dorris family was one of the first small groups of founders of Jefferson City, Cole Co., Missouri who built log cabins in the wilderness to form the village which was to be the capital of the state. In 1826 McDaniel Dorris was established in business, operating a distillery, which he continued for many years. There was, at this time, no internal revenue tax. His product was said to be clear and sparkling like spring water, with a potent quality that caused those who drank it to fight snakes where others could see no snakes.
