He was the son of John Dixon McReynolds and Sarah Moore. He had at least two older brothers, Joseph Alexander McReynolds and William McReynolds.

Orphaned brothers, Joseph McReynolds (21 Tennessee, farmer), William McReynolds (18 Tennessee, farmer) and Leonadas McReynolds (13 Alabama) appear in the 1850 United States Federal Census (06 November 1850) for District 24, De Kalb County, Alabama (family 54). They were living with their ?uncle and aunt?, James Moore (62 Tennessee, farmer, real estate valued at $1700) & Mary Moore (53 Virginia) and their sons, James J. Moore (24 Tennessee) and William M. Moore (20 Tennessee, farmer).

L. D. McReynolds enlisted as a Private in Capt. Clifton's Company, Cherokee Davis Guards on 15 November 1861. He was signed in by J. M. Clifton, for a period of 12 months. Private McReynolds was mustered in on 17 November 1861 in Nashville, Tennessee by Capt. A. I. Lindsey, C. S. Infantry.

L. D. McReynolds appears on the Company Muster Roll for Company A, 4 Batt'n Alabama Vols. from 31 December 1861 to 30 April 1862. He was promoted to Asst. Surgeon on 15 March 1842.

L. D. McReynolds, Asst. Surgeon, appears on the Muster Roll for the 4th Battalion Alabama Volunteers on 22 November 1862 "mustered in on 30 June 1862, for two months, at Vicksburg". They were camped "near Abbeville". His appointment as Assistant Surgeon was made "by Major Clifton under first organization and the appointment approved by Brig. Division Commander".

On 23 February 1863, Clifton's 4th Alabama Infantry Battalion combined with the 6th Alabama Infantry Battalion to form the 55th Alabama Infantry Regiment (900 veterans), when it was organized at Port Hudson, Louisiana.

The 55th fought at Baker's Creek and Jackson, Miss. The Regiment was attached to the Army of Tennessee in the Spring of 1864 and suffered heavy losses in the retreat from Georgia.

There is a Requisition for Forage for the first quarter of 1864 for one Private Horse in the service of Dr. L. D. McReynolds, C. S. Army in the Field, for 91 days commencing the first of January and ending the 31st of March 1864. He was given a Daily Allowance of 12 pounds of Corn and 14 pounds of Hay for a total of 1082 pounds of Corn and 1274 pounds of Fodder. He received his requisition on 31 March 1864 in Demopolis, Alabama from the Assistant Quartermaster, C.S. Army. Signed L. D. McReynolds, Asst. Surgeon, 55 Ala. Vols.

On 21 July 1864 Ass't. Surgeon, L. D. McReynolds, C.S.A. performed an operation, "head excised" on Private Daniel J. Sratt, Company H, 55th Alabama, age 25. He was injured on 20 July 1864 and had a "fracture of head of the right humerus". Daniel had a "gunshot wound entering the axilla and passing out at the lower portion of the scapula". After many skirmishes, the 55th participated in the Winter Campaign in Tennessee, with a long list of casualties at Franklin and Nashville.

The 55th Alabama surrendered on 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina with the C.S Army (when Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered).

McReynolds (32 Alabama) appears in the 1870 United States Federal Census (21 July 1870) for District 8 (Ripley Post Office), Lauderdale County, Tennessee (page 7, family 54) along with his wife, Virginia McReynolds (20 Tennessee). Also in the home was Mary's widowed mother, Martha Jordan (49 Tennessee) and son Edmund Jordan (16 Tennessee, med student). Leonidas was a physician. He had a personal estate of $1000.
