Muriel Louise Johnson, 87, of Carthage, died of cancer Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at De Smet Memorial Hospital.

Muriel Fader was born Sept. 6, 1912, in Madison. She attended school in the Orland Consolidated School District and graduated at age 16 from high school. She attended Nettleton Vocational School in Sioux Falls and then moved to Geneva, Ill., where she worked in a defense plant. She entered the U.S Marines and was stationed at Cherry Point, N.C.

She married Malcolm E. Johnson on July 12, 1945, in Luverne, Minn. She was honorably discharged from the Marines, and the couple then moved to Esmond. They farmed near Esmond and then moved to Carthage in 1974.

She was a member of the Marine Corps League of Huron, the American Legion Auxiliary of Carthage and the United Church of Christ in Carthage.

Survivors include three sons: James of St. Paul, and Bruce and David, both of Carthage; one daughter, Jo Murdock of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ with burial in Pleasantview Cemetery, both in Carthage.

Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. today at Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard and for one hour before the service Thursday at the church.
