BARINEAU, BARBARA JEAN ABERCROMBIE - age 71 of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2008. Born in Sneedville, TN to Edna and Dan Gibson and was adopted at the age of 18 months by Dr. Eugene and Roberta Hickey Abercrombie of Knoxville. She attended Tyson Jr. High, National Cathedral for Girls in Washington D.C., and graduated from West High School. She played basketball in high school and was a fan of the Lady Vols. Barbara attended UT Knoxville and UT Chattanooga before making her home in Knoxville. She loved the outdoors, and her love for camping, canoeing and tennis grew from summers spent at Camp Allegheny in West Virginia. Barbara played tennis up until May of this year at Lakemoore Hills and Knoxville Racket Club. She was an excellent pianist having been a student of Evelyn Miller for 12 years. Barbara volunteered at the Red Cross for 30 years as a swimming instructor. She loved being active, but her greatest love was her family and friends. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her biological sister, Emily DeLoach; and brother, Harold Gibson. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law , Margaret & Jim Peery; son, David Barineau; grandchildren, William Taylor Peery and Margaret Louise Peery; brother, Denver Ward of Tucson, Arizona; cousins, Dr. James H. and Cornelia Hickman Jr. and family, Dr. Charles Edgar and Leslie Rutherford Jr. and Anne Louise Rutherford; biological cousin, Claude Collins. Special thanks to Juna Baxter, Mary Tippet, Trudy Heiss, Jackie Hollway, Lynn Anderson and friends at Kingdom Hall for their love and support. Barbara was a baptized witness of Jehovah and spent many hours sharing her faith. The family would also like to thank the employees of Claiborne Hauling for their support during this time. Family will receive friends from 3-5 pm Sunday in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy., with a funeral service to follow at 5 pm. Family and friends will meet at Greenwood Cemetery Monday for an 11 am interment service. Pallbearers will be James H. Hickman, III, Dr. Charles E. Rutherford, Jr., Will and Jim Peery, Drew E. Gilbert, Hentz Barineau, Michael Ray Kirkland, Robert Moore, Bill Reeves and Charlie Kirby.
