John was the oldest of 8 children of Reverend Thomas & Julianna (Silvanus) Rutledge. In 1839 John's parents moved to Greene County, Indiana.

John married Rhoda Long on March 21, 1855 in Greene County, Indiana. In 1860 he & Rhoda lived in Indian Creek, Monroe County, Indiana & by 1862 they are living in Hobbieville, Greene County, Indiana.

John & Rhoda had 3 daughters:

On August 18, 1862 at Camp Dick Thompson in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana John mustered in as a Sergeant from Hobbieville, Greene County, Indiana. He served the Union with Co E 97th Regiment Indiana Infantry (Film# M540; Roll 66). In September 1862 he was ordered to Indianapolis & put on a train to head south to Louisville, Kentucky & onto Memphis, Tennessee where he served duty there until December 18, 1862. John fought in the siege of Vicksburg, the Battle of Atlanta, Resaca; assault on Kenesaw & the battles of Griswoldville, Bentonville, Chattanooga(Wikipedia).
